PHNOM PENH: The World Health Organization Cambodia has warned for the possible surge of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the kingdom. This was following Monday’s daily Covid-19 record released by the Ministry of Health in which all 15 new cases discovered are imported Omicron variant. The warning comes from WHO Representative in Cambodia Dr. Li Ailan. However, she expresses that Cambodia has the effective tools in fighting the new variant of Covid-19.

Dr. Li Ailan says, “Cambodia has detected and reported more imported Covid-19 cases due to Omicron. This is anticipated or not unexpected. Neither “overreaction” nor “inaction” is helpful. Omicron is highly transmissible and we need to be ready for a possible surge. We have the effective tools!”

She has added that in response to Omicron and the Delta variants, the five key tools that Cambodia has been using are the combination of: getting fully vaccinated, 3 do's and 3 don'ts, health care capacities, early detection and response, and a risk-based approach to international border measures.

Prime Minister Hun Sen first announced the discovery of 15 Omicron cases on Sunday evening, during the arrival of the first batch of Pfizer vaccines donated by the Australian Government. However, the Prime Minister has urged people not to fear as the kingdom has the proper health measures in place. Despite the 15 Omicron cases recorded, Cambodia has not recorded any local transmission of Covid-19 in 24 hours. It was just a week ago when Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced the end of the 20 February Community Transmission Incident.
